FANTASTIC FIRST ISSUE
The first issue of Doctor Who Weekly was published on Thursday, October 11, 1979, with the cover date of October 17, 1979. The latter date indicated to the newsagent of when to remove the issue from sale in readiness for the next issue to be released (the following day). While Doctor Who Magazine was a weekly publication, it would hit the shelves every Thursday.
The front cover featured a publicity photo of Tom Baker, dressed as the then current Doctor, with a Dalek from "Genesis of the Daleks". The issue came with the first of four sets of transfers that were to be used to add detail to two full-colour panoramas on the inside cover. When the 500th issue was released in 2016, Peter Capaldi, as the then Doctor, was pictured in the same pose as Baker, but with a modern Dalek. That issue also included a guide as to where the transfers should have been positioned.

Someone on board the liner is smuggling the dangerously addictive drug vraxoin. It is eventually revealed that the smugglers are Tryst, a scientist, and Dymond, the Hecate's pilot. Tryst has a Continuous Event Transmuter (CET) machine containing recordings of planets that he and his team have visited. The interface between the two ships allows some monstrous Mandrels from the mud-swamps of Eden to escape from the CET machine - which does not merely take recordings, but actually displaces whole planetary areas. Vraxoin is in fact the material into which the Mandrels decompose when they are killed. The Doctor thwarts this plan, separates the two ships and returns the Mandrels to Eden. [TARDIS Data Core] |
